The Manchester United homegrown appears set to depart the Red Devils after 22 years at the club. McTominay has been at United since age seven but Erik ten Hag and company are now on the verge of cashing in on him.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that the Scotland international is 'expected' to travel to Italy today to finalise a move to free-spending Napoli where he would link up with Antonio Conte.

Man Utd reached an agreement with the Serie A giants on Sunday on a €30 million deal, putting the ball in McTominay's court. The midfielder had a decision to make and Ornstein reports that he now appears to be leaning toward leaving his boyhood club, with progress being made on personal terms.

McTominay sale - an unpopular but necessary decision?

Man Utd have not been desperate to sell McTominay as Ten Hag appreciates the 27-year-old's application, but it may be viewed as a necessary evil to fund incomings.

Man Utd have agreed a deal with PSG for top target Manuel Ugarte, as exclusively revealed by The Transfers Podcast, and the funds raised from McTominay's exit will go a long way towards financing the Uruguay international's €60m arrival.

Nevertheless, not everyone is happy about the current business, with Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand stating that the potential sale of McTominay does not thrill him. "It really doesn't sit well with me, to replace him you are going to have to spend, 30, 40, £50m and it's not going to be cheap to replace him," he said on Rio Presents.

"It's a gamble, you don't know what you're going to get with that next player, whereas with him you know what you're getting, it's on the tin, he turns up when he's playing, might not always be an eight or nine out of ten but he is a good seven and every now and then he will be an eight and get you a goal."
