Man Utd RESURRECT move for controversial striker as price plummets

Manchester United have resurrected their move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, well aware that the England star’s asking price has plummeted.

According to Football Insider, Man Utd plan to sign another striker this summer despite the presence of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund.

The plan is to sign an experienced striker, and Toney fits the bill.

Man Utd had been interested a few months ago but were put off by Brentford’s asking price.

Brentford initially had slapped a €100 million asking price on Toney but given his contract expires in 2025 and the unwillingness of anyone to pay even close to that amount, the price target has plummeted in recent months.

Now Football Insider reports that the asking price has dropped even more, with Brentford slashing another €23m off their valuation.

Toney’s form has not helped as he has not scored for Brentford since February, having returned from a long betting ban.

FootballTransfers revealed recently that Tottenham had a bid turned down by Brentford for Toney, who has already verbally agreed personal terms with the side.

Man Utd have now rejoined the race to sign the England striker.

Brentford are set to sell the striker this summer as his contract expires in 2025.

Arsenal and Chelsea had been well ahead in the race for Toney for several months, despite interest also from the likes of West Ham and Newcastle.

But all three of these London sides have now ended their interest in the striker.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has admitted that it is virtually certain that Toney will be sold this summer.

Toney back from ban

Toney missed the first half of last campaign due to a betting ban but returned to playing in January after which he scored four goals, but none since February.

Toney was selected in England’s Euro 2024 squad but barely played.

His only real contribution was in the last 16 against Slovakia when he came on as a late substitute to help Jude Bellingham score a late equaliser. England went on to win in extra time but eventually lost in the final to Spain.
