The Red Devils homegrown has departed the only club he has ever known. After 22 years at Man Utd, McTominay has now joined Napoli in a €30 million transfer, with the Premier League side also retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

The Scotland international has joined up with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte in Naples for what is bound to be a wild ride in Serie A. Napoli have spent lavishly this summer to provide Conte with a squad capable of challenging at the summit of the table.

However, it wasn't set in stone that McTominay would make the move to Italy. The ball was in his court after Man Utd and Napoli had agreed a fee and, after some deliberation, he ultimately decided to make the jump.

Though the Red Devils were not desperate to sell him, the incoming funds made a deal for top midfield target Manuel Ugarte possible. Moreover, McTominay knew that he would not be a starter under Erik ten Hag, so it made sense to try a new experience.

Napoli sign McTominay

The Serie A giants have now officially unveiled the 27-year-old as their latest recruit, reuniting the former Man Utd midfielder with ex-teammate Romelu Lukaku.

Napoli beat off competition from Premier League sides to land the Scot. Namely, Fulham had launched several bids for his signature but were rebuffed by a Man Utd hierarchy holding out for at least €30m.

The Italians showed themselves willing to shell out this sum and it represents a very good deal for Man Utd. Not only are they making 'pure profit' from the sale of the academy product but his knack for important goals also will not come back to haunt them in domestic competitions.
