Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles’ ACL injuries mean that Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and summer signing Lloyd Kelly are the only fit senior recognised centre-backs in Newcastle’s squad.
As a result, Howe’s side are looking to bring in at least one more central defender.
Despite interest from numerous top Premier League teams, Newcastle are reportedly the first club to engage in meaningful talks to sign Guehi.
