Arsenal target to sign new contract after failed summer move

Arsenal target Daniel Bentley is reportedly set to sign a new contract at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 31-year-old was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer transfer window as the Gunners looked to purchase a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side eventually signed Neto on a season-long loan deal from Bournemouth, having been priced out of a move for top target Joan Garcia.

Bentley was also considered by Arsenal, but Wolves were unwilling to sell the Englishman and he stayed put at Molineux as a result.

Bentley is now set to sign a new two-year contract extension with Wolves, according to talkSPORT. The 31-year-old has less than 12 months remaining on his existing deal and Gary O’Neil’s side are expected to trigger the two-year extension in Bentley’s contract.

The former Bristol City shot-stopper is yet to feature so far this season, with Jose Sa preferred, while the Deadline Day arrival of Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace means Bentley could well be third-choice shortly.

However, he now looks set to stay at the club, despite interest from Arsenal.

Arsenal’s summer transfer business

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal signed Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino and David Raya on permanent deals.

Calafiori arrived from Bologna for €45m, Merino cost €32m from Real Sociedad, while the Raya’s loan move from Brentford was made permanent for a fee of €31.9m.

In addition, Raheem Sterling and the aforementioned Neto both joined the club on loan.

Meanwhile, Arsenal sold Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham, Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton and Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace.

Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Karl Hein all left on loan, while Mohamed Elneny, Cedric Soares and Arthur Okonkwo departed upon the expiration of their contracts.
