There were more than 50 goals scored in the first week of the new-look Champions League but one of the biggest talking points came from a goal that didn’t happen after David Raya’s incredible double save for Arsenal.

The Gunners were being held to a stalemate against Atalanta before the Italian side were given the opportunity to take the lead in the second half after Thomas Partey gave away a penalty.

Matteo Retegui saw his spot-kick saved but it was the follow-up attempt that stunned fans, with Raya going full stretch to parry the striker’s rebound from point-blank range.

The reaction stop ensured Arsenal held onto a draw in Italy, with TNT Sports commentator Robbie Savage calling Raya’s play as ‘one of the best saves I’ve ever seen.’

And Savage wasn’t alone with his opinion, with social media erupting as football fans of all fandoms voicing their disbelief at Raya’s wonder reflexes.

The stop was Raya’s fourth penalty save from his last eight spot-kicks faced, including shootouts, and was the second time in recent weeks that the Spaniard was praised for his reflexes, having made another result-changing contribution against Aston Villa last month.

Raya was given numerous shouts for ‘the best goalkeeper in the world’ and ‘a frontrunner for player of the season’ by some supporters on social media.

Some fans also spared a thought for Aaron Ramsdale, who joined Southampton this summer after being ousted by Raya to be Mikel Arteta's number one.
