Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes that Chelsea will sell Cole Palmer for £100 million.

Article continues under the video

Palmer has been a revelation ever since joining the Blues from Manchester City a year ago.

He was one of the few bright spots of a miserable 2023-24 campaign for the club as he delivered a brilliant 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 games in the Premier League. He also scored two hattricks and was named Premier League Young Player of the Season.

Palmer’s brilliance also saw him become an important player for the England national team, and he scored the temporary equaliser during the Euro 2024 final before Spain eventual won the game 2-1.

The 22-year-old has already arguably become Chelsea’s most important player but Merson believes that the Blues will sell him if they receive a massive offer.

What did Merson say?

“If [Nicolas] Jackson scores 25 goals next season, they will sell him,” Merson said.

“If Palmer becomes unbelievable and keeps on doing what he is doing, then he will be a £100m player. They will sell him for £100m. That’s how it works.”

Chelsea transfer business

Chelsea’s transfer business over the last couple of years has been well scrutinised.

The Blues have spent close to €1.5 billion on new players ever since Todd Boehly and his consortium bought the club in 2022 following the forced demise of former owner Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea have handed out numerous long contracts of seven, eight and even nine years, with Jackson having a deal that runs until 2023.

The club has also been focusing heavily on signing very young players who have the potential to increase their value significantly.

Palmer falls into this category as his transfer fee of £40m plus £2.5m in bonuses has more than doubled already.

It has been suggested by the likes of Merson that this is Chelsea’s long-term plan to satisfy their investors; to sell the likes of Palmer for huge money once their value increases dramatically.
