Erik ten Hag has boldly claimed that only Manchester City are better than his Manchester United team in the Premier League.

Ten Hag has been heavily criticised by fans and pundits ever since arriving at the club two years ago from Ajax, and he narrowly avoided getting the sack this summer.

Despite finishing third and eighth in his two Premier League seasons, flopping in Europe and breaking a host of negative records, Ten Hag is insistent that only Man City have performed better than Man Utd during his time at the club.

What did Ten Hag say?

“Behind Man City, we have won the most trophies over the last two years… so we performed better than anyone else,” Ten Hag said.

“That’s the reality. Those are the facts. This year, we want to win trophies and I’m quite confident about it.

"We brought young players in, we progressed young players, we won trophies, so what can I do more?.

"As far as I know, the fans are happy with me. But it's not about me; it's about Man United and of course, we set higher targets.”

Ten Hag won the EFL Cup in his first season at Man Utd, before following that up with the FA Cup last season.

United beat City 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley, a result that is largely believed to have saved him from getting the sack.

These two trophies mean that United have won more than trophyless Arsenal in the last two years, a fact that Ten Hag believes means they are better than the Gunners.

Ten Hag’s United have started the new season in mixed fashion, with one won and one draw from their first two Premier League games.

They beat Fulham 1-0 at home on matchday one thanks to a late Joshua Zirkzee goal before losing 2-1 at Brighton, with Joao Pedro hitting a late winner.

United also lost the Community Shield on penalties to Man City after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The Red Devils are next in action on Sunday when they play Liverpool at home in the Premier League.
