The Belgian international was adjudged to have fouled Bernardo Silva, but he received a second booking for delaying the restart by kicking the ball away.

It’s the second time in just three Premier League games in which Arsenal have seen a player sent off for delaying the restart.

Declan Rice also suffered the same fate against Brighton & Hove Albion, when he touched the ball away from Joel Veltman and was shown his marching orders.

Trossard’s sending off came in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time and it followed a stunning turnaround by Mikel Arteta’s side.

Erling Haaland had opened the scoring for Man City with a fantastic one-vs-one finish past David Raya, but goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel Magalhaes had put Arsenal in a commanding position at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Trossard ruined the Gunners’ comeback with a needless second yellow card.

Despite the fact he clearly kicked the ball away after Oliver had blown his whistle to signal a free-kick, Arsenal fans were fuming at the decision on social media.
