Manchester United are expected to sack Erik ten Hag today if his team are beaten by Aston Villa.

According to multiple sources, including ESPN, the Manchester Evening News and Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag is set for the chop if things go badly against Villa.

Romano says that United chiefs need to see a positive performance more than anything else, but the consensus among most of the media is that a loss will signal the end for Ten Hag.

Ten Hag was already under big pressure going into the Premier League clash with Tottenham last Sunday but a 3-0 home defeat put the Dutch manager on the brink of the sack.

United then collapsed from 2-0 up at half time to draw 3-3 with Porto in the Europa League, which only worsened matters.

A defeat to Villa will likely be the final straw ahead of the international break.

Man United currently find themselves languishing down in 13th position in the Premier League with a minus-three goal difference after six games. They were also humiliatingly thrashed 3-0 at home by Liverpool last month.

United have failed to win either of their Europa League games, drawing with Twente and Porto, only rescuing a point against the Portuguese team with an injury time Harry Maguire goal.

Ten Hag had been expected to be sacked this summer after a generally miserable 2023-24 campaign in which - despite winning the FA Cup - Man Utd finished eighth in the Premier League and were dumped out of Europe at the Champions League group stage.

United held an internal review on Ten Hag’s future and even spoke to a number of potential managerial replacements, but in a shock development decided that the Dutchman would be staying at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag to be sacked?

That decision appears to only be a short stay of execution as the bookmakers believe that Ten Hag will be the next Man Utd manager to be sacked.

A number of top names are waiting in the wings to replace Ten Hag, including former England manager Gareth Southgate, ex-Chelsea bosses Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is an internal choice after impressing the club since arriving as assistant manager.
