Manchester United are interested in re-signing Angel Gomes, according to a report.

The newly-minted England midfielder came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and is to this day the youngest debutant in the club's modern history.

However, Gomes would only go on to make 10 senior appearances for Man Utd and eventually headed to France, joining Ligue 1 side Lille. The 24-year-old has thrived in his new surroundings and was recently rewarded with his England debut by interim boss Lee Carsley.

His impressive form in the French top flight has inevitably given rise to speculation surrounding a potential return to England. The fact that the midfielder is out of contract next summer has only added fuel to the fire.

Now, it is claimed that Erik ten Hag has asked Man Utd's scouting department to study whether or not Gomes would be a good fit for his system.

Man Utd want Gomes return

That is according to GIVEMESPORT, which asserts that the Red Devils are keeping an eye on Gomes, though the outlet makes sure to mention that, as things stand, it is only a 'small level of interest.'

Gomes is attractive to Man Utd because he would cost them nothing and would help the club with their homegrown quota. Moreover, it is thought that settling in would be easy for him given Old Trafford and Carrington are familiar surroundings for him.

In addition to Man Utd, Tottenham and Liverpool are mentioned as suitors, while Newcastle are seen as having an outside chance of securing Gomes' services. The player is thought to be on a relatively small wage at Lille and therefore expects to receive a significant pay rise with his.

A contract extension at his current club is described as unlikely.
