The Spain international sustained the injury during the Citizen's 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Eithad. Rodri collided with Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey inside the Arsenal penalty area and he was forced to limp off the pitch in the 20th minute.

Now his club have stated that he picked up a ligament injury - though they did not specify how long he would be out for.

The injury poses a huge problem for Pep Guardiola and City, with Rodri being one of the club's star players. Without him, the midfield is significantly weakened. The Manchester side are attempting to regain the title once more but have the threat of Arsenal, who are looking even stronger than ever.

Too many games states Rodri

In a case of sick irony, his injury comes after the 33-year-old joined the players lamenting fixture congestion, even stating that players are on the verge of going on strike.

"Yes, I think we are close to that [striking]," he said. "If it keeps this way we will have no other option. It is something that worries us. Between 40 and 50 is the amount of games in which a player can perform at the highest level. After that, you drop because it is impossible to sustain the physical level. This year we are maybe going to go until 70 or maybe 80. In my humble opinion, I think it is too much."

"Someone has to take care of us because we are the main characters of this, let's say, sport, or business, whatever you want to call it. Not everything is about money or marketing. It is about the quality of the show. In my opinion, when I am not tired I perform better. If people want to see better football then we need to rest."
