Mason Mount’s career has nosedived since Thomas Tuchel left Chelsea in September 2022.

He suffered several injury problems during his final season at Stamford Bridge and was unable to perform at his best level under Graham Potter or Frank Lampard, while his fortunes have worsened at Manchester United.

The presence of Bruno Fernandes has restricted Mount’s ability to play in his favoured role, although the ex-England international has simply not been fit enough to become a key player at Old Trafford.

He’s already missed 30 games through injury since his move to Man Utd last summer, while he has only tallied two goal contributions in 25 appearances for the club.

Injury problems have been a huge contributing factor in Mount’s struggles at Man Utd, but Erik ten Hag has also failed to get the very best out of him even when fully fit.

As a result, Thomas Tuchel’s move to England is actually bad news for Mount.

Mason Mount needs Thomas Tuchel

Many have suggested that Mount may work his way back into the senior England squad thanks to the FA’s appointment of Tuchel, with the pair sharing a strong relationship thanks to their time together at Chelsea.

Mount was an indispensable member of Tuchel’s preferred starting XI in west London and he enjoyed the best spell of his career under the guidance of the German.

However, while Mount is more likely to earn a future England recall with Tuchel at the helm, the 25-year-old would have benefitted far more had Man Utd appointed the ex-Chelsea boss as Ten Hag’s replacement at Old Trafford - as was heavily rumoured.

Working with Tuchel on a daily basis would’ve been hugely beneficial for Mount and he may well have been able to rediscover the form that saw him notch 11 goals and 10 assists in 32 games during the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

But, Ten Hag remains in charge and although the Dutchman isn’t at fault for Mount’s injury problems, he seemingly doesn’t know how to best utilise the former Chelsea starlet when he’s available.

Mount has only completed the full 90 minutes in one game since joining Man Utd and the likelihood of him becoming a key player at Old Trafford is extremely limited while both Ten Hag and Fernandes are still at the club.

Tuchel to England may have boosted Mount’s chances of an international recall, but the Chelsea academy graduate will wish that Man Utd had pulled the trigger and appointed his former boss as Ten Hag’s successor.
