That is according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that Man Utd’s legendary former manager has told the club’s chiefs that Allegri is the right man for the job.

Ferguson and Allegri have always had a good relationship and Gazzetta says that the Scotsman has advised to go for the Italian ahead of other options such as Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel.

Gazzetta also adds that Man Utd’s favoured target to replace Ten Hag is currently Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi.

Ten Hag is at risk of the sack after the 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, with reports the Dutchman will be axed if United don’t get positive results in the next two games against Porto and Aston Villa.

Man United currently find themselves languishing down in 13th position in the Premier League with a minus-three goal difference after six games. They were also humiliatingly thrashed 3-0 at home by Liverpool last month.

It is likely that Ten Hag will be sacked next week during the international break unless he gets positive results this week.

United play away to Porto in the Europa League on Thursday and then travel to play Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. It may require two wins but at least a win and a draw from these matches to convince United's owners to stick with Ten Hag.

Britain’s bookmakers expect Ten Hag to be sacked sooner rather than later, with the Manchester United boss the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked.

All of Britain’s bookmakers have Ten Hag as the favourite to be the next coach to get the chop in England.

Ten Hag had been expected to be sacked this summer after a generally miserable 2023-24 campaign in which - despite winning the FA Cup - Man Utd finished eighth in the Premier League and were dumped out of Europe at the Champions League group stage.

United held an internal review on Ten Hag’s future and even spoke to a number of potential managerial replacements, but in a shock development decided that the Dutchman would be staying at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag to be sacked?

That decision appears to only be a short stay of execution as the bookmakers believe that Ten Hag’s days are numbered.

A number of top names are waiting in the wings to replace Ten Hag, including former England manager Southgate, ex-Chelsea bosses Tuchel and Graham Potter, as well as the aforementioned Allegri. Ruud van Nistelrooy is an internal choice.
