Manchester United have opened talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre back Jonathan Tah.

That is according to Fichajes, who report that United have begun negotiations with the entourage of the Euro 2024 star.

Tah is available on a free transfer at the end of the season having decided to run down his contract with Leverkusen.

He played a key role in Leverkusen’s historic season last term as they won the Bundesliga unbeaten, and also lifted the DFB Pokal before just missing out on the treble by losing the Europa League final to Atalanta.

Tah had been expected to join Bayern Munich this past summer but agreed to stay at Leverkusen for one more season.

Fichajes report that United are in talks to sign Tah, where he would be a replacement for Harry Maguire.

Maguire’s contract at United expires at the end of the season and there are no plans to extend the 31-year-old’s deal despite a clause in his contract that allows them to do that for one more year.

Barcelona are also said to be considering making a move for Tah, with the Blaugrana having relied on the free transfer market in recent years.

He has won 32 caps for the Germany national team and he partnerred Antonio Rudiger at the heart of the defence at Euro 2024 before they were eliminated by eventual winners Spain in the quarter-finals.

He was also in Germany’s squad for Euro 2016 where they were knocked out by France in the semi-finals.
