Man Utd fume over £100m Greenwood mistake
Manchester United are ‘frustrated’ at having lost out on more than £100 million on Mason Greenwood, according to a report.
Greenwood departed Man Utd in the summer to join Ligue 1 side Marseille in a deal worth just £22m (€26m).
This came off the back of the 23-year-old being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022. A year later, these were dropped by police following the withdrawal of a key witness, with Greenwood having maintained his innocence throughout the saga.
Nevertheless, an internal investigation at Man Utd deemed that he was not an appropriate player for the club and he was moved on, initially to Getafe on loan but finally to Marseille.
With the Ligue 1 club, Greenwood has been in fine form on the field, scoring five goals in six appearances, and this is a cause of frustration for the Old Trafford side.
GiveMeSport reports: “Key figures within Manchester United expected Greenwood to go on and become a £100million talent after seeing him break into the first-team picture following his progress through the youth ranks, and they remain extremely disappointed to have lost out on securing a potential nine-figure sum in the future.”
Barcelona’s Greenwood interest confirmed
Barcelona continue to be heavily linked with a future move for Greenwood, which is a deal that GMS has confirmed.
“Barcelona are interested in offering Greenwood a quickfire route out of his current surroundings, with head coach Hansi Flick and president Joan Laporta eyeing an opportunity to land a high-level performer with genuine elite potential on the cheap,” the report states.
Quite why Marseille would be willing to part with a player who has been so successful for them in his early weeks at the club ‘on the cheap’ is not explained, with OM in a strong negotiating position over the player given he is under contract until 2029.
