EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Gordon signs Newcastle contract extension
Anthony Gordon is now Newcastle's highest-paid player after signing his contract extension at the club, FootballTransfers can reveal.
We are told that the England international has now put pen to paper on a long-term deal, with just the announcement pending.
The winger was linked to a move to Liverpool, his boyhood club, over the summer. But Gordon has been offered a mega-money deal that would not have been possible anywhere else, while conversations with Eddie Howe have helped convince the 23-year-old to stay with his current side.
Gordon made 23 goal contributions for Newcastle last season, picking up the club's Player of the Season gong. But Liverpool were approached by the PIF club over a potential deal involving Gordon that would see Joe Gomez go the other way, as they sought to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
A deal did not come to fruition between both clubs but there was an idea that Gordon had his head turned or that the Merseyside club would make a bid for him next summer.
But we understand that the contract is signed and Gordon has now affirmed his future at St James' Park, extending his current deal which runs until 2026.
Howe on contract
Eddie Howe was quizzed about Gordon's contract late last month. But the Newcastle head coach remained coy on the matter. He told reporters: "You're asking me to comment on something that hasn't happened. With the potential of looking silly if it doesn't. We love Anthony. We'd love him to commit his future here.
"We'd love him to stay long-term at Newcastle and continue his excellent start to his career here. When you look at the broader piece of what he's done since he's arrived at the football club, I think he's been magnificent for us. We need to try and help him get back to his very best levels.
"And if that means signing a new contract, then I'm all for that, to help him be settled and concentrate on his football."
However, we are told that a deal has since been struck and that the club will be making the announcement shortly.
