United are understood to have agreed a deal with Sporting for Amorim to succeed Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was sacked this week, with their new manager set to begin his role after the international break in November.

Sporting are determined to keep hold of their manager for as long as possible as they continue to try and defend their title and Amorim has admitted the ‘soap opera’ could be over after the club’s next game against Estrela Amadora on Friday.

"It's a negotiation between two clubs, which is never easy, even with the termination clauses. After the game, we'll have all these clarifications, one more day and everything will be clear," Amorim told Ojogo.

“The situation is very difficult. When I don't know what to say and what can be said, it makes everything more difficult. When I'm very direct, whether good or bad, it's much easier for me. I have communication problems like any coach.

“What makes me most nervous is the whole situation itself, everything around it, it makes me quite nervous. It's difficult to focus on the games, but I'm managing to focus more. The soap opera is ending."

The details behind Amorim's switch to Old Trafford

United have met Amorim’s €10 million release clause but the 39-year-old has a 30-day notice period in his contract, causing the Premier League side to have held negotiations with Sporting to bring their new manager in at a sooner date.

Sporting are aware that the buyout clause in Amorim’s contract can be considered a low amount and the Portuguese champions are determined to ensure they do not bow to United’s demands, having been disappointed at their manager leaving in the middle of the season after previously being assured he would stay until next summer.

But an announcement is expected imminently that a deal has been struck, with United understood to be paying a total of €12m to bring Amorim and his staff to Old Trafford for the game against Ipswich on November 24th.

Part of the agreement will be for Amorim to remain in charge for Sporting’s crucial next three matches against Estrela, Braga and the Champions League fixture against Manchester City as the club begin their search for his successor.
