Alexander Isak ran riot in the first half of Newcastle's clash against Arsenal.

The Sweden international got between Gabriel and William Saliba to head home a fine first-time cross from Anthony Gordon.

It now means that he has scored in each of his last three games for the Magpies, despite getting off to a rocky start to the season.

Last season, Isak netted 25 goals in all competitions for Newcastle. And now he is starting to get up and running this term.

The 25-year-old has been in talks with Newcastle over a new contract, but such talks have been shelved as both parties have been unable to find middle ground.

Even though he is under contract at St James' Park until 2028, there is the nagging feeling that Isak may see an exit from Tyneside sooner rather than later.

Arsenal opted not to sign another striker in the summer, with Mikel Arteta keeping faith in Kai Havertz. But the Gunners have not got off to the best of starts in the campaign and so a new No.9 could well be needed.

Howe on Isak contract

Speaking before Newcastle's Premier League loss to Chelsea on Sunday, Howe was asked about Isak's future. "That's a slightly more complex situation," Howe said.

"Regarding contracts, I'm not involved in those discussions day to day. With Alex, he's got a long contract anyway at the football club and we have to be really careful with our spending due to profit and sustainability rules (PSR). It's not a clear-cut situation."

Howe continued: "We of course love him [Isak] and are desperate for him to stay at Newcastle for many years and score loads of goals for us. I don't see a short-term issue with his contract."
