Amorim, 39, has been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent replacement at Old Trafford, although he won’t start work at Man Utd until his notice period at Sporting CP ends on 11 November.

His first game in charge of the Red Devils will come against Ipswich Town on 24 November and Amorim will be tasked with rescuing the club from their worst ever start to a Premier League season.

Man Utd have picked up just 12 points from their opening 10 league matches so far this campaign, and they are now 13th in the English top flight table after a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Following the result versus Enzo Maresca’s side, Lampard was quick to point out what Amorim must do upon his arrival at Old Trafford.

What has Frank Lampard said?

“I think we’ll find out with a new manager,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “I think it’s too broken, they’re far too big in and out of possession.

“I think they need to work out how they can get better connections through the team, better partnerships through the team. That will help consistency.

“Individually, the players all have to show a bit of humility with the new manager and go: ‘We’re going to show we want to play for this club.’

“There wasn’t a lack of effort today, the chaos is everywhere, the effort is still there. But I think the fresh start and going back to the basics of what they want to be.

“And you might go: ‘Once we get the basics right, then we’ll see the talent and then confidence will start coming back to individuals within that.’

“At the moment it’s like: ‘If it happens, it happens. If not, oh no.’ It’s very up and down at the minute.”
