Manchester United's senior staff are deeply concerned with one of their major signings over the summer transfer window.

Joshua Zirkzee was the club's first addition ahead of the new season and they beat clubs in Italy to his signature after activating his release clause, thought to be set at €42.5m.

The No.9 position was of tantamount importance to United after their dreadful end to the 2023/24 season. The previous head coach, Erik ten Hag, relied solely on developing striker Rasmus Hojlund in his first term in England.

The Netherlands international scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in his 37 appearances for Bologna last season. But he has just a single goal to his name this season at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old netted on his debut, in what was a 1-0 home victory against Fulham in the opening Premier League game. But since this, goals have disappeared and now there are serious question marks over him and even his future.

Manchester Evening News have made the shocking claim that some senior figures at United now regret signing him. Their story read: "Manchester United are having serious doubts about summer signing Joshua Zirkzee.

"Some senior club figures have concluded striker Zirkzee, who has scored one goal in 17 games, is not good enough four months on from his £36.5million transfer from Bologna.

"United are expected to be in the market for a dependable goalscorer next year, which would almost certainly require the sale or loan of one of their incumbent forwards."

Amorim believes in players

The Red Devils have seen an uptick in form after Ten Hag was sacked and Ruud van Nistelrooy came in as the interim manager. They remained unbeaten with their former player before he was displaced by Ruben Amorim., who arrived from Sporting CP.

Amorim has said that he believes in all the players despite the criticism aimed at some. He said via Goal: "I am a little bit a dreamer and I believe in myself and I believe in the club, I think we have the same idea, the same mindset and that can help," he said. "I truly believe in the players also. I think we have room to improve and I want to try new things. You guys think it is not possible, I think it is possible."

He said: "I think we have to improve the physical aspect of the team. I think we lose the ball too often, we have to be better at running back, I think that is clear to everyone and I think we have to be better on the details. We have to improve on the small things. In the small things, I think I can help a lot."
