Man Utd eye transfer raid on former Amorim favourite and PSG star
Ruben Amorim could reunite with one of his former Sporting stars at Manchester United by raiding Paris Saint-Germain in the process.
The United manager took formal charge at Old Trafford this week and is set for his first game against Ipswich on Sunday where he will assess how his new squad adapt to his system.
United have not made any formal transfer decisions yet ahead of the January transfer window, with Amorim first wanting to see how his squad fares in the coming weeks, however the club are keen to sign a left-back irrespective of any development.
And the Daily Mail report that United are ‘keeping an eye’ on PSG left-back Nuno Mendes, who came through Sporting’s academy and made 40 league appearances under Amorim at the Portuguese side.
Mendes joined PSG on loan in 2021 before a permanent €38 million move but the 22-year-old only made six league appearances last season due to injury and has failed to command a regular first team spot this year.
A mid-season move could prove difficult to United operating under tight financial constraints but the club are continuing to assess their priorities and budgets in order to establish the best option for January.
United set to expand search for left-back
Mendes is one of three left-backs named in the report as being under consideration by United due to the ongoing fitness concerns surrounding Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, both of whom have yet to play this season.
Alphonso Davies, out of contract next summer at Bayern Munich, is one of the names alongside Mendes, while Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is also a target, as first reported by FootballTransfers.
Alvaro Carreras is also believed to be an option, with United retaining a €20m buy-back on the Benfica wonderkid after his loan there was made permanent in the summer.
Although a left-back is undoubtedly a priority for United, the club are also considering whether a striker or centre-back are more of a concern, while a midfielder is also wanted by Amorim.
