Tottenham Hotspur are exploring a move for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey, FootballTransfers has been told.

With the 24-year-old's contract ending this season, we understand Brighton may be motivated to sell in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Tottenham's pursuit could also see them fend off interest from Everton, another club considering the right-back.

Lamptey has over 106 Premier League appearances for Brighton. Since joining the south coast club from Chelsea, he has consistently grown into a Premier League regular.

He is capable of playing right-back, right-wing-back, and even left-back. This flexibility is particularly attractive for Spurs, we are told, as the side needs options at the back amid concerns over squad depth and player fatigue.

But mostly, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou’s interest in Lamptey comes amid uncertainty around their current right-back Pedro Porro. Although the 25-year-old has played heavily for Spurs this season, his form has been inconsistent, and it's thought that it would be ideal for someone to come in and deputise him.

It comes after Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer said that Spurs will not sack Ange Postecoglou just yet.

“Typical Spurs though, isn’t it? My goodness me. They beat City at home, they beat Villa at home with a great win, and then you got Ipswich at home. Ipswich turn you over,” the Newcastle legend said on The Rest is Football podcast.

“I don’t think so [Postecoglou under pressure]. No, I think you just look at it like that, he took responsibility, didn’t he?

“He said it’s his fault, his problem. He’s got to sort it out. But when you see them in the second half against Villa and then beating City, it’s just, it’s the inconsistency again. How long have we been saying that about Spurs?”

Spurs lost to Ipswich Town last week in their last Premier League encounter. In the game before that, the North London club lost to Galatasaray 2-1 in the Europa League.

The club have had a mixed start to their season and it's not clear whether they will manage to secure a place in the Europe this term.
