Although Tottenham Hotspur are again having a very inconsistent season, Micky van de Ven continues to augment his sparkling reputation.

In fact, the Dutch international, who can play both as a central defender and left-back, is said to have caught the eye of Real Madrid with his development.

The Spanish giants are looking for defensive reinforcements, with a view to the long term. However, Van de Ven will have to forget about this blockbuster transfer for the time being as Tottenham are unwilling to sell.

The 23-year-old defender has been developing like no other in recent years. Since his time at FC Volendam in the second-tier Keuken Kampioen Divisie, he has been 'launched' to the Premier League via VfL Wolfsburg.

There, Van de Ven stands out with his speed and defensive qualities. So much so that he was Player of the Season at Spurs last term.

Spurs don't want to sell

This season has unfortunately been one to forget for Van de Ven so far. The defender has been struggling with injuries almost continuously and had to watch his club slide to Premier League no man's land this weekend.

However, despite his current injury, there have been persistent rumours about a move to Real Madrid. The Spanish champions only have three options in central defence, partly due to injuries.

In addition to Van de Ven, other prominent names are also on the Spanish club's radar, such as Josko Gvardiol and Castello Lukeba. Lukeba in particular seems to be an expensive option due to his contractual buyout fee of no less than €90 million.

Journalist Ben Jacobs came with the reassuring word for Tottenham fans on Sunday evening: "Spurs have no intention to sell Micky van de Ven in January despite Real Madrid links. Van de Ven contracted until 2029 with no release clause. He remains happy at Spurs."

Despite the need for reinforcements, Real Madrid do not seem to be in a hurry. The club are calmly exploring the possibilities and holding talks with several players and their representatives.

Additionally, the long-awaited return of David Alaba and the emergence of talent Raul Asencio could reduce the need for a winter transfer. The versatility of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who can play as a defender if necessary, also gives Real an extra option in terms of team selection.
