United are looking to rebuild under Amorim after his arrival last month, with young prospects still on the club’s agenda despite the departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth this week.

More than €200 million was spent on players during the summer but one of the club’s lowkey arrivals in 18-year-old Sekou Kone is thought to be the blueprint for United’s next signing.

United are understood to be in advanced talks to sign Paraguayan defender Diego Leon, with negotiations already underway with his club Cerro Porteno over a €4m move plus add-ons.

Leon’s entourage are believed to already be in England to finalise a deal and the player’s mother has revealed that her son is desperate for the move.

Speaking to futbolclubpy, Brigida Blanco said: “Diego is relaxed, I asked him if he wanted to go [to Manchester United] and he said it’s the dream of every footballer. He’s convinced he will go, he wants to go.”

United ready to swoop for ‘the great promise of Paraguyan football’

Leon has already established himself as a regular for Cerro Porteno, scoring twice in 19 appearances, and the teenager has been described as ‘one of the great promises of Paraguayan football.’

The left-sided defender only made his senior debut in August but was known in the club’s academy for his goal threat, having been the captain and top scorer for under-18s.

Leon’s brother, Hernan, also spoke of the links, saying: “'I hope something comes of it', is the first thing my brother said to me when we told him what has been said on social media since yesterday about United’s interest.”

Like Kone, Leon is expected to initially feature in United’s youth team but could eventually progress to the club’s first team, particularly with the shortage of options at left-back following another injury to Luke Shaw.
