Liverpool are not typically a club that is busy in the January transfer window, yet the Premier League leaders are making moves that could see significant changes at Anfield, where the future of Darwin Nunez is under threat.

Manager Arne Slot has opted for the evolution of Jurgen Klopp’s squad following his summer arrival at the club, with the Reds making few summer transfers following the arrival of the Dutchman.

In the short term, it’s been an overwhelming success. Despite drawing 2-2 with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool are the runaway Premier League leaders and look well placed to claim Manchester City’s crown.

But there are long-term doubts. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract at the end of the season, with only the Dutchman making positive noises about signing a new deal.

While the contract negotiations go on in the background, other issues are being sorted.

Bajcetic to Real Betis confirmed

Spain U21 midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is set to sign for Real Betis on a loan deal. He spent the first half of the season with RB Salzburg, but it proved to be a disaster, with ex-Reds boss Pep Lijnders departing following a poor run of form.

TodoFichajes has confirmed that the 20-year-old, who burst onto the scene before succumbing to serious injury, is heading back to his homeland.

“Liverpool have already finalised their deal with Betis, so before the end of the week his signing on loan for the next six months will be made official,” it states.

“Manu Fajardo's idea is to get an option to buy the Spanish player in the summer transfer window, although this is not the plan of the Anfield team.

“The agreement between the clubs is complete, so Bajcetic is already a reality for the Betis fans. A very promising midfielder, who if he reaches his best form and enjoys confidence, could be important for the team.”

Anfield Watch reports that Liverpool are seeking a deal to sign Johnny Cardoso from the Spanish side, so it may be that a deal for Bajcetic is tied to this in some way.

Reds want big money for Darwin

Darwin Nunez is another player who could leave Liverpool, although it would take a sizeable fee to prise the Uruguay striker away from the club.

Nunez has disappointed since his €85 million move from Benfica. He has scored only four goals across all competitions this season and does not appear as prominent in Slot’s thinking as he was under Klopp.

The 25-year-old has had a price tag of €60-72m placed on his head, according to Football Insider.

Nunez’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is €45m, down from a high of €57m. As such, it is unlikely the striker, who is under contract until 2028 will be on his way in January.
