Liverpool are set to come to a loan agreement with Napoli for the transfer of Federico Chiesa to the Serie A side this month.

Chiesa only signed for the Anfield club in the summer in a €12 million deal from Juventus but has spent the vast majority of his time with Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders injured.

Italy’s Euro 2020 hero has played only four times for Liverpool, taking to the pitch for a total of just 123 minutes amid a muscle injury. Since returning from those problems, he has only played 45 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Southampton.

With Chiesa looking ill-fitting at Anfield, the management have taken the quickfire decision to offload him in January and have given the green light to a loan move to Napoli, according to FootMercato.

The 27-year-old has been told to return to Serie A by Italy boss Luciano Spalletti and it appears that he is ready to heed that information.

While the player’s €7.5m salary has been a sticking point, Napoli are now in position to make a loan offer for the player.

Chiesa’s agent Fali Ramadani held talks with Liverpool last week, with the Reds agreeing to allow the player to go away on loan until the summer with the idea that he will continue at Anfield from next summer.

This sparked Ramadani into action. He reportedly took a proposal to Napoli, with Antonio Conte given his thumbs up to the proposal. Now the Serie A club is readying a bid.

Man Utd’s dream transfer hopes dashed

The knock-on effect of Chiesa going to Napoli will be most profoundly felt by Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils had been eyeing up a potential swap deal with the Serie A club that would have seen Marcus Rashford sent to Italy with Victor Osimhen returning in the opposite direction.

This was supposed to be a dream transfer for Ruben Amorim’s side, which would have killed two birds with one stone. Firstly, it would have allowed them to get the problematic Rashford off their books while it would also provide them with the prolific striker they have so long craved.

Chiesa to Napoli is, therefore, a loan that can leave Liverpool particularly satisfied on all fronts if it comes to fruition.
