Matthijs de Ligt has been widely criticised for his performance during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Netherlands international moved to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich for a transfer fee of €45 million in August, with Erik ten Hag playing a key role in his arrival following their spell together at Ajax.

However, De Ligt has failed to improve Man Utd’s backline and he could soon be usurped by Leny Yoro, who is expected to become one of Europe’s best centre-backs over the next few years.

In fact, Man Utd fans have urged Ruben Amorin to drop De Ligt following his dismal second-half display against Liverpool.

The 25-year-old performed fairly well during the first 45 minutes, but he cost Man Utd victory with two crucial errors.

Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring with a smashing finish in the 52nd minute, however the Red Devils’ hard work was undone seven minutes later when Cody Gakpo cut inside to rifle an equaliser home for Arne Slot’s side.

De Ligt foolishly slid in against his international team-mate and Gakpo predictably cut onto his stronger right foot before firing an effort past Andre Onana.

The Dutchman then conceded a penalty after blocking a Alexis Mac Allister header with a raised hand. Mohamed Salah dispatched the resulting spot kick, and although De Ligt’s blushes were somewhat spared when Amad Diallo rolled home a late equaliser, Man Utd fans have slammed him for his role in allowing Liverpool back into the game.
