He has been pressurised to reduce his contract but has persistently rejected these offers from Barcelona. Previously, he seemed determined to see out his contract until 2026 but now El Nacional claims that he is ready to complete a sensation U-turn and move to Man Utd or Chelsea.

It is reported: “The player is beginning to seriously consider the possibility. Although he feels comfortable in the city and values the status he has in the dressing room, De Jong is aware that his sporting situation will not improve with Flick in charge.

“The German coach, who has prioritised other players in midfield, does not seem to count on him as a key piece for the medium-term project.

“This circumstance added to a personal ambition to recover his best form, could push the player to accept a change of scenery.”

De Jong’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has dropped form a career high of €86m – the fee that Barcelona paid for him – to €44.7m.

De Jong answers transfer rumours

Barcelona’s hopes of selling De Jong to Manchester United, though, appear to have been dashed by a new interview the former Ajax star has given to VI and published on Thursday.

During this, he once again reiterated his happiness in Barcelona, apparently knocking these fresh transfer rumours on the head.

“My contract renewal is an issue for the papers here, but for me it's not. I want to play football, and after that I will see what the club wants to do with me, and then I will decide what I want to do, together with my agent and family,” he said.

“People often think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because I'm living so well outside of football. That's all true, but it's secondary to what happens on the pitch. If I feel that I can't show my best here, or that I wouldn't be able to win anything with the team anymore, I wouldn't stay here.”

De Jong has, therefore, not entirely closed the door on a move to Man Utd, but he does not appear as close to leaving Barcelona as the rumours might suggest.
