Amorim confirms Rashford is FINISHED at Man Utd with INSULT Mourinho would be proud of
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has all but confirmed that Marcus Rashford’s career at the club is over with a withering put down of the England international.
Rashford has not been seen on the field for the Red Devils since he was dropped for the Manchester derby in the middle of December, so it came as little surprise when he was not named in the squad to face Fulham on Sunday.
Lisandro Martinez’s deflected shot deep into the second half gave Amorim’s side three points, and even after his side laboured to score, the Portuguese insisted that he has no problems with Rashford’s ongoing exile from the team – even insisting that he would rather have his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach on the bench.
Asked once again following the match why Rashford was not present, Amorim said: “It’s always the same reason. The reason is the training, the way I see what a footballer should do. In training, in life and it’s every day, every detail. So if things don’t change, I will not change.”
The cold nature of the insult is reminiscent of former Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho, who could be someone who could help unlock the door to a January move for Rashford.
Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund look the likeliest destinations for the exiled 27-year-old, but neither move looks straightforward due to finances.
No way back for Rashford
If Rashford does remain at the club beyond the close of the transfer window on 3 February, Amorim has no plans to reintroduce him to the side, with Jorge Vital, the club’s goalkeeping coach higher up the pecking order.
“I will put Vital [on the bench] before I put a player that doesn’t give the maximum every day so I will not change in that,” he said.
“It’s the same situation for every player. If you do the maximum, if you do the right things … we can use every player. You can see it today on the bench – we miss a little bit of pace to go, to change the game, to move some pieces, but I prefer [it] like that.”
Amorim, meanwhile, admits that he feels he has aged a decade in the weeks since he took the Man Utd job in the middle of November.
He celebrates his 40th birthday on Monday and he said: “It’s not 40, I’m 50. After two months at Manchester United, it’s 50. You cannot see a great improvement in the team and that is a fact. But to win helps us to improve. We’ve had some lack of luck in some games. Today was not the best match but we managed to win.”
Next up, United play FCSB in the Europa League, with Rashford set to miss his 12th successive fixture.
