Manchester United are at risk of missing out on long-standing target Sverre Nypan, according to David Ornstein, Fabrizio Romano and Norwegian media.

A boyhood Red Devils fan and teenage wonderkid, Man Utd have been scouting him for years. Still only 18, Nypan has been a senior with Rosenborg since 2022 and his precociousness has earned him comparisons to Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.

Nypan previously revealed that it would be a dream come true for him to join Man Utd, who have been persistently linked with a move for him since at least 2023.

Despite their long-standing interest and the glowing reports they will have surely received from their scouts, Man Utd have thus far refrained from making a concrete move for Nypan.

Recently, this dithering from the struggling Premier League giants gave rise to speculation that Nypan could be on his way to a rival. While initially Arsenal and Chelsea were mooted as potential destinations, it seems that he is now on his way to Manchester after all - but not to the red side.

Nypan in talks with Man City

According to Norwegian outlet Adresseavisen and since confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Nypan is expected to arrive in Manchester shortly to tour the facilities of Man City and to hold talks over a transfer.

It is claimed that the idea would be for the 18-year-old to initially link up with City Football Group-owned Girona on loan before later becoming part of Pep Guardiola's side.

While Nypan has not yet made a final decision on his future, it would be a major embarrassment if Man Utd, after all these years, were beaten to his signature - and by their local rivals, no less. Additionally, David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed that Arsenal are firmly in the mix, too.

Nypan's club, Rosenborg, are keen to do business in January rather than in the summer as the new Eliteserien campaign kicks off in March, so they would prefer to avoid losing their midfield dynamo mid-season.
