News of Zubimendi’s transfer exploded on Tuesday, with the 25-year-old expected to leave La Real to hook up with the Gunners.

He has a release clause of €60 million which has reportedly been triggered, although Real Sociedad are hopeful that he will remain in San Sebastian until the summer.

Zubimendi has regularly been to the forefront of the football gossip and rumours columns in recent months. In the summer, he had been expected to join Liverpool yet turned them down in order to remain with his boyhood club. Weeks later, more reports emerged that he regretted the decision.

Zubimendi worn down by transfer rumours

It now appears that he could be on his way to the Emirates Stadium, though reports in the Spanish media are less positive than those in England, with the midfielder apparently growing weary of all the transfer chatter.

AS reports that the player is “absolutely committed to Real Sociedad and has not even considered leaving in this winter market”.

Indeed, Zubimendi is said to be frustrated with the “constant” speculation coming from England.

It adds: “The San Sebastian player is tired of so many rumours and gossip - because at the moment there is nothing.

“The only thing that Zubimendi is clear about is that he is absolutely focused on Real Sociedad and totally committed to his project.

“The San Sebastian native does not want to hear anything about offers from other clubs and much less talk about his departure from the club of his loves being already set for a decision in June following reports that Arsenal will pay his €60m release clause next summer.”

Arsenal’s need for Zubimendi is clear, with central midfielder Jorginho and Thomas Partey both out of contract in June and neither looking likely to stay.

Despite the player being worn down by all the transfer rumours, it seems that Mikel Arteta will get his man – but he may need to be just a little more patient before the deal is finally completed, while Zubimendi will have to put up with the transfer rumours a little longer whether he likes it or not.
