Pep Guardiola's marriage is ending as he and his wife Cristina Serra prepare to separate.

News of Guardiola's divorce broke first in the Catalan press via Laura Fa and Lorena Vazquez reporting in Sport.

The surprising element of the story is the degree to which Man City are involved in the reasoning for the split.

According to Sport, Cristina's decision to end her 30 year marriage with Pep was made in December. That comes just after Pep renewed his contract with Man City, which he did on November 21st.

And while it will probably never be confirmed, it's hard not to draw obvious conclusions that the split is motivated by Guardiola's decision to extend his stay in Manchester to a decade.

After all, Serra left Manchester (along with her children) back in 2019 to return to Barcelona where she runs a family-owned fashion business.

For the last five years, her and Guardiola have been happily living apart as both remained committed to the professional parts of their lives.

But what was originally thought to be a four or five years stay in Manchester (after all, Guardiola's previous jobs at Barcelona and Bayern Munich lasted four and three years respectively) has gradually, renewal after renewal, gotten longer and longer.

June 2025 was supposed to be the final stop, however.

Guardiola had delivered everything to Man City, winning the Treble in 2023 and turning City into the best club in the world with a squad loaded with superstars. Now he could walk away and return to life with his family.

However Man City's form collapsed in the Autumn of last year (due to poor squad planning and an unlucky injury to Rodri).

Guardiola lost four times in a row for the first time in his career and it truly felt like his historic run at City would end on a down note. Serra must have secretly been glad that her family could be reunited.

Guardiola, however, renewed his contract.

Then Ange Postecoglu's Spurs beat City's brains out 0-4 at the Etihad to celebrate that renewal.

Five losses in a row because six defeats in seven games, which then ballooned into nine defeats, two draws and just one win between the end of October and Christmas Day.

Pep seeing City in that kind of a state will have felt professionally obligated to fix things before he left, hence renewing his contract, but to his wife it must have signalled that this is a man who will never "go home and be a family man" and, so, she ended things.

The pair are reportedly still on good terms, but you can't blame Serra for finally giving up on Pep ever stopping doing what he clearly feels compelled to do.
