Under fire Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is finally ready to break open his chequebook and spend to ensure manager Ange Postecoglou has a competitive team for the second part of the season.

Spurs’ form has collapsed this term, with the 2-1 reverse at home against Leicester on Sunday the latest setback to hit the London side.

While Postecoglou has not escaped criticism, the defeat against the Foxes was marked by protests against the club board, which has conspicuously failed to strengthen the team adequately following the sale of star man Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in 2023.

Levy has failed to sanction a like-for-like replacement for Kane, and while Spurs did have a net spend of over €100m last summer, much of this was on signing young prospects such as Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Lucas Bergvall.

Another has followed in the form of Antonin Kinsky due to a long-term injury to first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. This is the only deal that Spurs have done so far in January, and it has left the fans angry given the league position of the team.

Spurs, though, may be about to strengthen spectacularly if a report in Spain is accurate.

Tottenham launch Nico Williams bid

Levy is getting ready to trigger the €58 million release clause of Nico Williams from Athletic Club, according to Fichajes.

There are, however, sticking points to the deal.

Firstly, there is no guarantee that Nico will want to leave at this point of the season. He turned down lucrative moves last summer to remain with Athletic as they attempt to play in the Europa League final at home. Barcelona were notably interested.

Perhaps more worrying from a Tottenham perspective, though, is that Arsenal are also carrying an interest in the player, who Mikel Arteta has admired for many months.

At least being linked to this type of player does suggest that Spurs are willing to be active participants in the January transfer window, which is something that looks necessary if Postecoglou is to make his team competitive in the latter stages of the season.
