Manchester United are reportedly “hopeful” of beating Arsenal to the signing of Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

The Sweden international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since Ruben Amorim’s appointment in November, but Man Utd are set to face significant competition for his signature.

FootballTransfers understands that Arsenal are currently prioritising a deal for Benjamin Sesko, but we have been informed that Gyokeres has been identified as the club’s first-choice alternative if they are unable to strike an agreement with the RB Leipzig star.

The Independent have now reported that Gyokeres is eager to work with Amorim again, with Man Utd confident they will win the race to sign him this summer.

This comes after Victor Osimhen was named as the Red Devils’ ‘dream signing’ by transfer expert Ben Jacobs.

The Nigeria international is currently on loan at Galatasaray, but he is expected to leave Napoli on a permanent deal this year, with Man Utd expected to rival Chelsea for his signature.

What has Viktor Gyokeres said?

In November, following Amorim’s appointment at Man Utd, Gyokeres told reporters (via The Daily Mail): “He probably has some strikers there already, so we'll see. He hasn't [asked me to join him].

“It's fun but nothing I attach any importance to because it's talk and nothing concrete.

“I want to finish this season at Sporting. I love it here. We will see [about a new club] when the time comes. I want to play, that's crucial, and there will also be other factors.”

Gyokeres has scored 75 goals in 80 appearances for Sporting CP, and he has also netted 15 times in 26 caps for the Sweden national team.

The former Coventry City forward has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €55.7 million, while his current Sporting contract isn’t due to expire until 2028.
