Liverpool star SIGNS two-year contract extension as U-TURN confirmed
Liverpool have finally received some positive news on the contract front, with Virgil van Dijk electing to sign a new deal with the Premier League leaders.
The Reds face something of a contract crisis currently as Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk could all leave the club as free agents in the summer, when their current agreements at Anfield expire.
Alexander-Arnold looks set for Real Madrid, Salah is increasingly tending towards a move to Al-Hilal and in recent days it has appeared that the Netherlands star will join him in the Saudi Pro League.
Reports from Saudi Arabia have indicated that Van Dijk is in “serious contract talks” with Al-Hilal, yet now Fichajes claims that the 33-year-old has instead elected to commit the next two years of his career to Arne Slot’s cause.
It reports: “The Dutch defender has decided to continue his successful career at Liverpool, signing a contract renewal that will keep him at Anfield for at least two additional years.”
New Van Dijk contract a ‘strategic victory’
Van Dijk is in the middle of another extraordinary season with Liverpool, turning in a string of displays that have seen him once again among the Premier League’s best centre-backs. Even in the latter stages of his career, there is no apparent sign of him losing his qualities.
His decision to remain with the Reds has been described as a “strategic victory” for Liverpool. Not only will they retain the services of one of the world’s leading defenders, but it will save them millions in finding a replacement during a summer in which they may need to replace both Salah and Alexander-Arnold – two other key players.
Van Dijk is just two appearances short of 300 for Liverpool, with that mark likely to be reached by Saturday, with the Reds facing an Anfield double-header against Lille in the Champions League and Ipswich in the Premier League.
