The teenager has signed an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge and he will remain with the Blues until the summer, when he is expected to join Strasbourg on loan.

Enzo Maresca's side reached an agreement to sign the 19-year-old for €15 million on Transfer Deadline Day, and the deal has now been formally announced by the club.

Amougou was one of three young options considered by Chelsea along with Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly and Sporting CP's Dario Essugo, however, a deal for the Frenchman was always more advanced and ultimately the Blues settled on him.

Man City were reluctant to lose O'Reilly without a buy-back clause, while Chelsea were unwilling to make that particular concession, which ultimately doomed the deal.

Upon confirmation of his move to Stamford Bridge, Amougou told the Chelsea website: "I'm very happy. It's an honour for me to sign for such a big club like Chelsea. They believe in young players and the process they have in place to develop us is fantastic."

Chelsea sign Amougou

In Amougou, Chelsea have signed a talented young midfielder who can play in both a No.6 role and as a No.8. The 19-year-old is expected to enter the picture of France's U20s in the near future.

Chelsea were determined to add another midfielder to their ranks and Amougou is an ideal fit for the club's transfer policy of signing up-and-coming, high-potential players.

This season, Amougou has made 17 Ligue 1 appearances for Saint-Etienne, although in recent weeks he lost the starting place he had at the start of the campaign.

All told, the 19-year-old has only made 19 senior appearances to date, so it will be interesting to see how he can fit into Chelsea's project. He is clearly not as far along in his development as some of the Blues' other options and is expected to join Strasbourg on loan in the summer.

However, the need for a midfield reinforcement became clear when deals for Cesare Casadei with Torino and Carney Chukwuemeka with Borussia Dortmund were agreed. Chelsea are still present in three competitions, so they had to bring in at least one nominal replacement.
