Liverpool may not know what lies ahead with Virgil van Dijk, but the Anfield club are fighting Manchester City to sign a player who has followed a similar career path to the Netherlands star.

Van Dijk has been one of the outstanding defenders of the Premier League era, yet his time at Anfield could draw to a close in the summer when his contract expires. He will become a free agent at that point and is currently free to talk terms with foreign clubs.

FABRIZIO ROMANO TRANSFER UPDATE: Osimhen RELEASE CLAUSE, Huijsen BOMBSHELL, Darwin Nunez TRUTH

Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are in a similar situation, and it is the latter of these players that Arne Slot’s side are said to be interested in replacing.

Liverpool and Manchester City are both interested in Bayer Leverkusen right wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, according to TeamTalk. He is a similar player to Alexander-Arnold in that he is typically revered for his attacking qualities, which have led him to scoring three goals and creating four more in just 22 games.

Like Van Dijk, Frimpong exploded onto the scene with Celtic before further enhancing his reputation elsewhere. Now he could follow his compatriot to Liverpool, with the Anfield club thought to be very interested in his signature.

Frimpong primed to move

Frimpong already has agreed a gentleman’s agreement with B04. This means that he will be able to leave if offers worth just €40m are made to the Bundesliga club. He has no formal release clause in his contract, with this having expired last summer.

This price point will see him earmarked by many major clubs as a potential bargain signing.

Frimpong’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €57.2m, which is nearly 50% larger than the fee that he is allowed to leave Leverkusen for.

Liverpool’s greatest threat in this case is Man City, where the 24-year-old came through the academy before being sold to Celtic in a deal worth just €400,000 before he had the chance to debut for the Etihad giants.
