Only four players in the Premier League have made more mistakes leading to goals than Onana this season, with the latest of his high-profile errors coming against Ipswich after a mix-up with Patrick Dorgu.

Onana’s time at Old Trafford has been filled with numerous mistakes and, despite only joining the club in 2023 for €50 million, United and boss Ruben Amorim are contemplating over whether a new goalkeeper is required this summer.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the situation has led to United considering a move for Burnley shotstopper James Trafford, who is believed to have agreed personal terms to join Newcastle this summer.

The Magpies had tried to sign Trafford last summer and their interest still remains strong, particularly with the 22-year-old having a standout season for Burnley where he is currently on a run of 13 games without conceding a goal.

However, United are said to believe they can convince Trafford to turn his back on Newcastle by offering him a chance to compete with Onana for the number one jersey next season, with Amorim set to fully assess his goalkeeping situation in the coming weeks.

United growing ‘increasingly concerned’ over Onana form

Trafford joined Burnley in 2023 for €17m and endured a difficult debut campaign in the Premier League, however he has been the Championship’s best goalkeeper this season, conceding just nine times in 34 games.

The England international came through Manchester City’s academy and is believed to still be keen on a move to Newcastle regardless of whether Burnley get promoted or not.

But United’s interest could pose a serious threat to Newcastle, particularly with the Red Devils growing ‘increasingly concerned’ over Onana’s form and believing in Trafford’s ability to eventually usurp the Cameroonian’s place in the squad.

United have not made any final decisions yet but the club are understood to be exploring the market for a replacement for Onana sooner than previously anticipated.

Trafford still has two years remaining on his contract at Burnley, with the Championship side still retaining hope in keeping hold of their star man, although a fee in excess of €20m could prove to be the biting point in a deal.
