Manchester United stand to be handed a welcome transfer windfall by Mason Greenwood that could fuel the summer spend of head coach Ruben Amorim.

United sent Greenwood to Marseille last summer in a cut-price deal worth €26 million that came about following accusations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm made towards the striker.

The 23-year-old denied these and charges were dropped, but an internal investigation from the Red Devils decided that the England attacker was no longer fit to wear the colours of the club. After a loan spell with Getafe, Marseille sealed a controversial summer move.

Greenwood has since scored 14 goals, including five penalties, in 22 Ligue 1 appearances for OM.

This has caught the attention of PSG, according to Fijaches. Indeed, the Parc des Princes club are reportedly willing to pay up to €70 million to their rivals to sign the attacker.

PSG’s interest in Greenwood should be music to the ears of Man Utd, who retain sell-on clause on the player that is thought to be valued between 40-50% of his transfer fee. As such, €35m could soon be winging its way to Old Trafford.

Any money that Marseille raise from Greenwood will be pure transfer profit and will go against the club’s fight to stay within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Head coach Ruben Amorim has already stressed that Man Utd will need to sell before they buy this summer, but if Greenwood were to move in a €70m deal this would reduce this need and be seen as bonus money.

Mason Greenwood to PSG: Will it happen?

Greenwood moving to PSG would rate as a huge shock, not least because PSG have been so image conscious since the arrival of QSI over a decade ago. Due to the player’s history, such a deal would be hugely controversial.

On top of this, they are unlikely to do business with the club that is their direct rival.

Equally, Marseille would be reticent to sell to the Ligue 1 champions given it is their stated ambition that they take that mantle from PSG one season soon.

Greenwood, then, is unlikely to be Man Utd’s saviour.
