Manchester United missed out on a second winter signing because head coach Ruben Amorim and CEO Omar Berrada disagreed over the arrival of a young Argentine prospect.

Man Utd completed only one transfer in the winter window, the addition of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. Prior to a catastrophic outing against Ipswich in midweek, the young Dane had shown much promise, giving fans room for optimism that Amorim might finally be the man to get it right in the transfer market.

The Red Devils also wanted a centre-back during January, but a deal with Argentine side Velez Sarsfield for Valentin Gomez fell through as Amorim and Berrada disagreed over the player.

The 21-year-old was targeted as a replacement for the injured Lisandro Martinez. The similarities between the two are clear: both are left-sided Argentines capable of playing at centre-back.

“It wasn’t a transfer; it was a termination. Once the player signs the payment commitment, he is free to do what he wants,” Berlanga told La Noticia.

“Through someone I know, I asked Manchester United to find out if they wanted him because of Licha Martínez’s injury. It was divided between the CEO and the coach, and they said no.”

It is not clear whether it was Amorim or Berrada who vetoed the deal.

Gomez has key player potential at Man Utd

No details of the transfer agreement are provided, but Gomez has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €13.2 million.

Given that United are limited in what they can spend in the market because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), they would have been unlikely to spend much more than this figure on the youngster.

Gomez is known as a speedy centre-back who was one of the leading players in his position in Argentina during the 2024 season.

According to data analytics firm SciSports, he has been going through a period of dramatic improvement and could one day become a key player for Man Utd if he reaches his full potential.
