Now they have been told that the 22-year-old is more open than ever to moving to the Premier League, having previously been reticent to leave Spain.
Nico Williams has been subject to intense speculation over his future for close to a year. Arsenal and Chelsea both launched bids for him last summer, but it was Barcelona who came closest to signing him. No deal was done as Nico decided that he wanted to stay in Bilbao.
At the time, it was revealed that the Basque star wanted to remain in Spain. Now The Athletic claims that he is more open to moving to the Premier League than ever before.

Who wants to sign Nico Williams?
Arsenal are not about to have it all their own way for Nico Williams, with transfer interest in the superstar intense.
Although the winger has endured a more difficult campaign, he is still wanted by the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, meaning that the competition is tough for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Nico Williams’ release fee of €58m makes him particularly attractive. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €71.2m, meaning that triggering his clause will mean any buying club will get him at an excellent price.
Arsenal appear to be best positioned to land the wideman yet Liverpool could be an attractive destination given the form of Arne Slot’s side and the possibility of a first-team spot being opened up if Mo Salah decides to leave.
