Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been given hope of landing a long-term transfer target, who has dropped a hint that he might like to turn out at the Emirates Stadium one day.

Barcelona forward Raphinha is enjoying the type of season that could see him wind up as a Ballon d’Or contender. The 28-year-old has 23 goals and 14 assists across all competitions this term, and if Hansi Flick’s side can close out the campaign by winning a major trophy or two, he will come into serious contention to win football’s biggest individual prize.

Now the versatile attacker has suggested that he might one day want to join Arsenal, who have frequently been linked with the player, who has just 18 months left on his Camp Nou contract, in the past.

In an interview with France Football, Raphinha said that his career has been inspired by Arsenal-era Thierry Henry.

“As a child, I liked watching the Premier League and Arsenal matches were often broadcast in Brazil,” he said. “It was Henry's best period.

“I also followed his performances in the French team. I obviously remember the quarter-final of the 2006 World Cup, when France eliminated Brazil with a goal from Henry. Despite this painful memory, I admired him for his style and his constant desire to score goals.

“He was a great inspiration to me. Today, if I love the goal so much, it's partly thanks to him.”

Former Arsenal sporting director Edu had previously confirmed that the Gunners had spoken to Raphinha about a move in 2022 only for the player to join Barcelona in what was his “dream” move.

Raphinha: I’m committed to Barcelona

Raphinha, who has regularly been linked with a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League, has committed his immediate future to Barcelona, who he has no desire to leave before his contract expires in June 2027.

“During the last four transfer windows, I've been sent to I don't know how many different places!” he said. “For my part, I've always remained focused on Barca.

“Above all, I have a contract that I intend to honour. The rumours come and go.

“What matters to me is the trust that people within the club show me. If those who work with you on a daily basis are satisfied, that's the most important thing.”

Arsenal will have to wait, then, if they are to land Raphinha one day.
