Premier League and Serie A propose radical change to the transfer market

Serie A president Ezio Simonelli has confirmed that the Italian top flight and the Premier League are still in favour of changing the closing date of the summer transfer window.
The idea of a potential reform to the summer window has been floated for some time. Indeed, already last year, bosses from Europe's top leagues considered amending the calendar.
The desire for change stems from the fact that the league season starts before the transfer window slams shut. This means that the final days and weeks of the market are fraught with uncertainty for players, recruitment chiefs and coaches.

Last summer, Deadline Day was on August 31 by which point the Premier League season had already been in full swing for two weeks and this was again cause for consternation, as it had been in previous years.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed in September that Serie A and the Premier League had already pushed for a resolution ahead of the 2024 summer window, but the plan fell apart when LaLiga, as the only top-five league, refused to agree to the change.

Serie A president confirms plan
Serie A president Ezio Simonelli has now confirmed that he and his Premier League counterparts are again trying to seek change ahead of summer 2025, although he admitted that the chances of success remain slim.
“On March 6, there will be an assembly in Frankfurt to nominate the new president of the European Leagues," he said in a press conference. "It will be an important step, where we will go to represent the Italian League. There is a theme that unites us with some leagues, which is the closure of the transfer market.

"I met with the heads of the Premier League and LaLiga. The idea of Italy and England is to close the market before the start of the championship. However, unanimity is needed at least among the main European leagues.
"Spain certainly won't want to close before August 31, for a series of practical reasons. This is what we understood also for Germany and France. If it were to be like this, we too would have to adapt because the market in the big leagues must close at the same time.
"We have this idea, but unanimity is needed and in my opinion, it won't be that simple."
