Todd Boehly drops Chelsea exit hint

Todd Boehly has hinted that he could sell his Chelsea stake if his stadium development plans aren’t aligned with Clearlake Capital’s.

The ownership group at Stamford Bridge have been engrossed in a major rift for several months, with Boehly and Clearlake Capital both eager to buy each other out, as per multiple reports.

Boehly has, however, downplayed such rumours, although he has admitted that he could be forced to consider his future with the west London club if they decide against pursuing a major stadium development.

Despite his presence at the forefront of Chelsea’s ownership group since their takeover in 2022, the American billionaire only owns a 12.8% stake in Chelsea, while Clearlake Capital, fronted by Behdad Eghbali, boast a majority stake of 62.5%.

Todd Boehly comments on his Chelsea future

Boehly provided a major update on his relationship with Clearlake Capital co-founder Eghabli during an interview with Bloomberg in Hong Kong.

“I think what the media writes about and talks about is exciting, but I just don’t think it’s realistic,” Boehly began. “If you look at the evolution of the team, we’ve been aligned on what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to build.

“It’s a team that’s young, it’s a team that’s got long contracts and in order to do all those things that we’ve done, obviously it’s because we’re aligned.

“If you look at what’s actually happening, and don’t follow the shiny lights, then you’ll see there is core stability, there’s been a long-term theme and I think we’re executing our plan that will ultimately have Chelsea where it belongs.”

When asked if he will sell his stake at Stamford Bridge, Boehly dropped a hint that he could leave Chelsea if Eghbali doesn’t match his stadium ambitions. “I think the status quo is something that’s just fine,” the American billionaire replied.

“We’ve learned from each other and I think we’re really going to be able to work it out any which way.

“We have to think about the long-term and what we’re trying to accomplish. We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to flesh out and that’s where we’re either going to be aligned or we ultimately decide to go our different ways.

“What’s been written and what’s been talked about is much more drama than what has actually happened.”
