Chelsea have been known for wasting millions of pounds on players they have signed, but now Jadon Sancho is causing them to face the embarrassment of a hefty payout on a player who they will not sign.

Sancho, 24, arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer on a loan from Manchester United that contains a commitment to purchase the player for a fee of around €25-30 million depending on their final Premier League position.

But now the Blues are ready to back out of that agreement as Sancho has failed to produce the goods for Enzo Maresca.

Fabrizio Romano reported this claim previously, but now The Independent has confirmed that the Blues will have to pay “millions” in order to renege on the clause in their agreement with Man Utd.

It is not confirmed exactly how much that figure will be, however.

While Sancho still commands an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €36.2m, this figure has fallen since he moved to the Blues, indicating that he has struggled to make the desired impact at Stamford Bridge.

This is echoed in his statistics for Chelsea. He may have made 29 appearances, but he has managed only two goals and generated only a further six assists.

Sancho’s form has fallen away since Christmas. Since scoring in the 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur on 8 December, he has just a single assist in all competitions.

On top of this, the former Borussia Dortmund winger commands a hefty salary that is reported to total €300,000 per week. Chelsea would have to take this on if they were to sign Sancho on a full-time basis, putting him right at the top of the salary scale ahead of the likes of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.

As such, the decision seems to have been taken to send him back to Man Utd and face the humiliation of paying a sizeable kill fee to stop the deal.
