His exploits have lifted him firmly into Ballon d’Or contention and he has now revealed that it is advice given to him by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that have helped shape him into the killer he is today.

“I once asked Wenger about the difference between good and great players,” Salah told TNT Sports. “He told me: 'The great players, it doesn't matter how he performs in the game. He always stays focused and waits for the moment'. And I put that into consideration. If you stay focused, maybe you will have one chance.”

It is fitting that it was Wenger who told him this given Salah’s performance is rivalling Arsenal legend Thierry Henry for the best Premier League season in history – with the Frenchman’s blistering 2002/03 campaign of course overseen by the legendary manager.

Salah refuses to commit future to Liverpool

Salah’s future remains shrouded in uncertainty.

His contract is up at the end of June and he has repeatedly hinted that this could be his last season at Anfield.

“I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave everything,” he said. “I want the fans to remember that I gave everything for them, everything for this city. I loved football, I gave everything for it and I wasn't lazy. I think that's what it's about, they give you love, you have a connection with the fans because you give everything.”

The Saudi Pro League is lining up a giant offer for Salah, which could even surpass the world-record contract that Cristiano Ronaldo earns in the Middle East.
