The Liverpool vice-captain is out of contract this summer there has been no news of an imminent extension with his boyhood club. On the contrary, it is looking increasingly inevitable that Alexander-Arnold will depart Anfield in the upcoming window.

The 26-year-old has been courted by Real Madrid for over a year and it appears that the capital club's charm offensive will pay off. David Ornstein of The Athletic has now confirmed that Los Blancos are trying to finalise an agreement with the player.

There has been an avalanche of assertions on Alexander-Arnold's future over the past 24-48 hours. Sky Sports Switzerland claimed on Monday that an agreement on contract terms had already been reached.

A few hours later, Sky Sports Germany stated that an accord was not done yet but that Alexander-Arnold was clearly leaning towards a move to Spain.

TalkSPORT declared early on Tuesday that the player had officially decided to join Real Madrid, while Fabrizio Romano announced that the deal was 'on.'

Alexander-Arnold set for Real Madrid

The reliable Ornstein now states that a formal agreement has not yet been reached and that Real Madrid have not yet informed Liverpool that a deal has been signed.

However, the journalist does note that Los Blancos are working hard to complete the acquisition of the Liverpool legend imminently. Ben Jacobs, meanwhile, reports that Real Madrid want to have Alexander-Arnold available for the Club World Cup.

This will require LaLiga to accept FIFA's extraordinary ten-day window at the beginning of June, while Liverpool would also have to agree to let Alexander-Arnold go before the end of his contract on June 30. The latter is not expected to be an issue.

It appears to be only a matter of time before Alexander-Arnold officially puts pen to paper on a long-term Real Madrid contract. It will be gutting for Liverpool to lose a distinguished homegrown star and a worrying development considering that Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are also out of contract.
