A left-sided centre-back is thought to be among United’s highest priorities this summer and their search has led them to a familiar conclusion, with reports that the club’s interest in Jarrad Branthwaite is likely to be revived.

United had a number of bids turned down for the Everton defender last summer but the club are more confident of a deal this year after another disappointing campaign for the Toffees.

Everton are expected to consider offers for Branthwaite with the 22-year-old stalling on a new deal and Sky Sports have also claimed that the defender is keen on an exit from the club he joined in 2020.

Branthwaite is expected to ‘consider his options’ this summer after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad in the hopes that a move to a bigger club could boost his chances to be selected for the World Cup next year.

United set for strong competition from rivals for Branthwaite

Everton had demanded a fee in excess of €70 million for Branthwaite last summer but United are hopeful they will be able to pay a lower fee this year, with the Red Devils continuing to operate under tight financial constraints.

Branthwaite has two years remaining on his contract at Goodison Park and, although Everton have an option to extend it for a further 12 months, the club are ‘bracing themselves’ for significant offers for the player this summer.

The likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City are among the sides expected to rival United for Branthwaite’s signature and the centre-back would prefer to join a side playing in Europe to further increase his England credentials.

United are set to miss out on European football next season unless they win the Europa League but Branthwaite is still willing to consider a move to Old Trafford as he bids to play his way into Tuchel’s thoughts going forward.
