The Red Devils were dumped out of the competition following a 4-3 loss on penalties at Old Trafford after Amorim’s side were unable to claim victory in regular time, despite an impressive left-footed finish from club captain Bruno Fernandes.

It means Man Utd have only won 11 of their 24 matches in all competitions since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP, with the club languishing down in 14th place in the Premier League table.

Man Utd have scored 20 goals in 13 games in 2025 and the club are desperate to bring a new centre forward to Old Trafford this summer in a bid to fix their current woes.

Rasmus Hojlund’s goalless streak was extended to 18 matches with yet another ineffective outing versus Fulham, while fellow forward Joshua Zirkzee has only scored once in his last 16 appearances.

What has Ruben Amorim said?

Following his side’s defeat to Fulham, Amorim told reporters: “No, we have a problem with goals. Today, we create situations, but even in the last game [against Ipswich], sometimes you felt that just in set-pieces, we are going to make some danger.

“So, I think the first step is to create situations. Today, we create, but we have to improve that to help our forwards and strikers to score.”

The aforementioned Fernandes is Man Utd’s top goalscorer so far this season, with 11 strikes in all competitions, while Marcus Rashford is fourth, despite not featuring for the club since 12 December.

The Red Devils are aiming to finalise an agreement to sign Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen during the upcoming summer transfer window, although they are set to face competition from Arsenal.
